Overview
Developed to meet the needs of line managers, supervisors, team leaders, heads of department and junior managers – our 1 day training course gives participants practical understanding of risk assessment in order to actively improve heath and safety and equips them to undertake a realistic, workplace related, electronic assessment that leads to a nationally recognised qualification.
The BSC Awards Level 2 Certificate in Risk Assessment is a nationally-recognised qualification for those with responsibility for the health and safety of others. It is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and designed in consultation with employers, the Employment National Training Organisation (ENTO) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Course framework
Our training utilises the very latest learning methods, with special emphasis on participative and interactive techniques. Overall, the aim of our training is to share knowledge and practical experience and, through tutor-led sessions, build on that experience so that every participant is able to manage risk assessment effectively and realistically.
The training sets out to develop sound and practical knowledge and understanding for day-todayapplication in the workplace and prepares each participant for the level 2 qualification assessment.
The training updates and replaces the BSC’s previous “Risk Assessment” course and can be considered in association with our new three day training module for Supervising Staff Safely – a broader training package covering management systems, hazards and risks, monitoring and legal requirements.
Course content
On completion of the qualification, candidates should be able to:
- Explain the reasons for conducting suitable and sufficient risk assessments
- Outline the main legislation relating to risk assessment
- Explain the difference between a hazard and a risk
- Apply a range of techniques to collect evidence for a risk assessment
- Outline the limitations of the techniques used to collect evidence for a risk Assessment
- Identify a range of health and safety hazards
- Identify who might be harmed and how
- Calculate an appropriate initial risk rating
- Outline the factors affecting the likelihood of harm being caused
- Outline the factors affecting the severity of harm
- Identify and evaluate existing control measures
- Propose additional control measures in order to reduce a risk to an acceptable level
- Apply the hierarchy of controls
- Revise a risk rating to reflect additional controls
- Record the findings of a risk assessment
- Review and revise a risk assessment when necessary
- Make recommendations based on findings of the risk assessment
Assessment arrangements
On completion of the one day training, candidates can register with BSC Awards to undertake the Level 2 assessment which leads to a nationally-recognised qualification. Each candidate is issued with an electronic template for a workplace-based risk assessment task. This means that learning acquired on the training course is practically and systematically applied with benefits for the candidate and the employer. The candidate’s findings/answers are then submitted electronically to BSC Awards. This file is forwarded to an independent health and safety practitioner for marking. A successful assessment results in the award of the BSC Awards Level 2 Certificate in Risk Assessment.
